Survey results released this week show that 91% of cybersecurity professionals experience mental health challenges at work. The sample size was relatively small with only 101 participants, and primarily focused on those working in Australia, but reveals a concerning pattern that surely is shared across other regions.  Of those surveyed, half reported that high-stress nature of the industry was to blame for their mental health impact.

“Burnout is the result of ongoing and seemingly unresolvable occupational stress. It impacts many aspects of a person’s life, including their mental capacity, effectiveness and energy. It can also cause increased negative emotional experiences such as frustration, anger, overwhelm, negativity and cynicism,” Rules said.

Findings like these are an important reminder that companies need to foster safe working environments and that we can't lose sight of ourselves in the process of collecting a paycheck. If you or someone you know is having a hard time at work due to stress or external factors, please seek help or encourage it.
